The John of Gaunt, Hungerford (2.6m)

Pub- RG17 0EH SU 339688
About nine miles from Newbury. Take the A4 to Hungerford and turn L at the mini-roundabout by The Bear Hotel. The John of Gaunt is about 200yds on the L.
A busy small-town pub that serves decent beer and bar snacks.

Go L out of the pub, cross the High Street and go over the canal bridge. Immediately double back to join the canal towpath, and follow this to the swing bridge just after the church. Cross this, then another bridge over the River Dun. Bear L onto a footpath that reaches the A4 near the top of Strongrove Hill, and take the FP opposite that climbs over the hill and drops down to the Aldbourne road. Turn R for 400yds, then turn L on a FP that crosses a bridge over the Kennet. Turn R on reaching a road and follow this for 600yds to a signed FP on the R that follows down field edges to the river and eventually meets the A4. Turn R and L at the mini-roundabout for the pub.
Note that this walk can be done from The Downgate Hungerford Common by walking across the common, under the railway, and turning L along the canal towpath. On the return, a footpath immediately before the JoG takes you back to the canal towpath. Additional distance about a mile.
