The Castle, Donnington (3.5m)

Pub-website RG14 3AA SU 467688
About two miles from Newbury, in the village of Donnington. Take the old Oxford road from the Waitrose roundabout, then SO at a mini-roundabout and about half a mile uphill to find the pub on the R just after a crossroads. Car parks on both sides of the road. A busy pub, being not far from Newbury: it has good beer and an interesting all-day snack and restaurant menu.

Cross the road and go through the gate across the cricket pitch to a gate on the other side. Turn R on the footpath and follow this forward for about 500yds as it passes the rear of a large house and rises through woods before coming out on a main road (fast traffic!) Turn L to the bridge over the bypass, then immediately take a FP L down to Cromwell’s Glen then up to the S gate of Snelsmore Common. Go L onto the track, then immediately R onto a FP that enters woods and descends to Honeybottom. On reaching a drive, take the bridle path off to the L and follow this for 500yds until you meet a FP descending through a field into Bagnor. Turn L along the road past the Blackbird and after crossing the river take a FP through the LH hedge and follow the R bank of the river under the Newbury Bypass. Continue forward, passing some modern buildings on the L, and leaving the Tee and the fairway of the golf course on your R until you reach the bridge over the ornamental lake on your L. Cross this and go past a walled garden on the L, leaving the drive for a FP going ahead. Take the first FP off on the R and follow this for 200yds to the cricket ground, which you re-cross for the pub.
